Dr. Smith is boarded in General Surgery and Addiction Medicine. Dr. Smith earned his Bachelors Degree at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He attended medical school at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. In addition to his medical training, Dr. Smith attended two years of graduate study at Marquette University in the Department of Physiology. His area of study was exercise physiology. Dr. Smith completed his internship in the Navy at Great Lakes, Illinois. He completed a surgical residency at the Naval Hospital in Oakland, California. Dr. Smith received fellowship training in Medical Oncology at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, and training in Surgical Oncology at Roswell Park Memorial Institute in Buffalo, New York. Following his fellowship training, Dr. Smith, in addition to his clinical practice, performed research in combat casualty care at the Naval Medical Research Institute in Bethesda, Maryland. He also was a member of the Army-Navy transplant team during those years. After leaving the Navy, Dr. Smith practiced primary care, general & thoracic surgery and medical oncology in Warrenton, Virginia. Dr. Smith practiced general surgery at the Outer Banks Hospital in Nags Head and later at Martin General Hospital in Williamston, North Carolina. Dr. Smith has served as medical examiner in Virginia and North Carolina.
Laura Smith joins Dr. Smith in his practice. Laura earned her degree in teaching at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. After teaching for a number of years, Laura accepted positions as a competitive swim coach in Warrenton, Virginia and later at the YMCA in Nags Head, North Carolina. Laura is an ASCA Level III certified coach. Laura has experience as a medical office manager and recently completed graduate studies at ECU Earning a Certificate in Substance Abuse Counseling.
